China·Anting 2011 Automotive Design Conference & Workshop

Tongji University, School of Automotive Studies is inviting all auto makers and interested suppliers to participate this event. The purpose is to exchange experience and technical ideas on innovative automotive concept development for Chinese market. Concept vehicles displayed in recent motor show can take this opportunity to disclose its ideas and development stories behind the scene.

This year’s main theme is “China · Mobility · Creativity”, presenters can choose
from following topics:
        ·  New possibilities for future mobility.
        ·  Design story of new concept/production car.
        ·  Chinese market oriented future vehicle design trends.
        ·  Environmental impact & new technology development.
        ·  Green identity – What should a green car look like?
        ·  Design school research project.
This year we will hold the workshop before the conference, and also extend the entire event to 7 days. For the 5 days workshop part, the class will focus on creative development process through quick sketching and 3D mock up construction. We are going to invite Art Center faculty member to be instructors and also 3-4 Art Center students will join in together with professional designers from Chinese auto companies to do hands on creative project in the workshop sessions. Selected trainee’s final results will be presented in the conference to receive comments from conference guests and to inspire industry creativity.
        ·  On the conference part, we will invite industry top designers and managers from both local and international OEMs to share their vision and exchange ideas on those topics that fit global interests. Due to rapid industry growth and vastly covered interests, this year the conference will be held on Sep 3-4 in the weekend.

Schedule:

◆ Aug 29 ~ Sep 02 --- 5 days Workshop

Professional workshop tailored for Chinese automotive corporate designers to recharge their creativities, polish their skills and learn new techniques. Instructors are from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, plus industry veterans and experienced demonstrators. Trainees are from Chinese auto company professional designers. (no students) To ensure one on one instruction, trainees will be limited within 30~35.
Most major Chinese independent companies are confirmed to participate, which incl Chery, Jeely, Brilliance, Haima, Chana, plus those state owned auto corporation like FAW, Dongfeng, SAIC, Beijing Auto...
Workshop Content:
Focus on creative development process through quick sketching and 3D mock up construction. Class guidelines are:
        ·  Example case study / User scenario concept creation
        ·  3D paper model development / 2D sketching & ideation
        ·  Material 3D composition / Dynamism & Ergonomics
        ·  Product graphics / Implied functionalities
        ·  Final model detailing / Presentation & Awards
All students need to bring in their laptop and drawing supply to do their own creation in the class. Event organizer will provide necessary paper model construction material and color printer.

◆ Sep 03 ~ Sep 04 --- 2 days Conference

Keynote speaker presentations on various topics grouped in 5 sessions each with
session host to hold panel discussion.
Simultaneous translation will be provided in both English and Chinese during the
entire conference.
Site Tour:
At the last day of the event Sep 04 (Sun), organizer will arrange a half day local tour which will cover Anting city’s automotive resources like Shanghai EV Demonstration Center, Automobile Museum, full size wind tunnel, School of communication & art in Tongji University.
